Score cards help deliver a results orientation that help any business, but there's a reason why (you might call it a secret... actually three) most businesses don't use scorecards.

1. The first trap most businesses fall into is that they haven't built a culture that supports tracking performance.  You can't paste score cards on a culture that isn't performance oriented and expect it to work.  But there's a way out of this trap and it means making sure just a few basic rules are followed:

1. Daily Rules: Live the following basic rules with all of your staff:

  • I get paid to Deliver Results, in a timely manner consistent with our guidelines, values, methodology and tools.
  • I get paid to do it right (follow the plan and process), and leverage information along the way.
  • My work isn't done until I've documented it.  No documentation means very limited score cards are feasible.

2. Limit Score cards to Outcomes: Most people struggle to create metrics and scorecards because they are trying to define how to score something like a bit vague, like improvement, being more efficient, less errors, etc.

  • The secret to avoid this trap is to measure outcomes, regardless of how the goal or project is defined.  e.g. if we improved the outcome would be and we're going to measure that outcome
